Top 10 Pool Safety Mistakes Homeowners Make (and How to Fix Them)
1. Forgetting the Gate Must Self-Close
If your pool gate doesn’t swing shut and latch on its own — every time — it’s a compliance fail.
✅ Fix: Test it from 45 degrees open. Adjust hinges or replace the spring if needed.
2. Leaving Climbable Objects Near the Fence
Chairs, pot plants, storage bins — anything within 900mm outside or 300mm inside the barrier can make it non-compliant.
✅ Fix: Remove or reposition anything climbable near the fence line.
3. Having an Out-of-Date Certificate
Form 23 certificates expire after 3 years — or earlier if the fence has changed.
✅ Fix: Check your issue date. Book a reinspection if it’s older or conditions have changed.
4. Windows That Open Into the Pool Area
ACT law requires windows facing the pool to be either sealed or fitted with secure restrictors.
✅ Fix: Install a lock or fixed screen to prevent openings over 100mm.
5. Boundary Fences Under 1800mm
If your boundary fence forms part of the pool barrier, it must be at least 1800mm high.
✅ Fix: Add screening or use an internal compliant barrier instead.
6. Gaps Larger Than 100mm
Any vertical or ground-level gaps exceeding 100mm are an instant fail.
✅ Fix: Adjust fence panels, infill low areas, or replace sections if needed.
7. Doors Opening Into the Pool Area
ACT regulations don’t allow external doors as a compliant pool entry.
✅ Fix: Replace with compliant fencing and a self-latching gate.
8. Rusted, Loose, or Warped Fence Sections
Safety barriers must be in good condition — free of rust, bending, or movement.
✅ Fix: Repair or replace damaged panels. Loose posts will also need reinforcement.
9. No CPR Sign
All pools must display a CPR sign — visible from the pool area.
✅ Fix: Install a weatherproof sign that meets current guidelines.
10. Not Booking a Pre-Inspection
The biggest mistake? Waiting for the official inspection without preparing.
✅ Fix: Book a free pre-check to catch issues before the official report.
