  • From 1 May 2024, all pools and spas in the ACT holding over 300mm of water must meet updated safety standards. This includes new and existing pools; those built before 2013 may require upgrades.


  • The ACT Government aims to enhance pool safety, especially for children, by ensuring all pools meet modern standards, reducing the risk of accidents.

  • All homeowners with pools or spas capable of holding over 300mm of water, including portable pools, must follow these rules.

  • Pool fences must meet height and strength standards, and gates leading to the pool area should self-close and self-latch. Regular maintenance is required to stay compliant.

  • All pools must be certified by 2028. Starting early is advised to allow time for any necessary upgrades

  • Book an inspection with a licensed certifier. If your pool doesn’t meet standards, the certifier will outline the changes needed.

  • Certification time varies; if no upgrades are needed, it’s quick, but modifications allow up to 6 months for compliance.

  • Non-compliant pools after 2028 can’t be sold or leased without upgrades and may incur fines.

  • Early compliance avoids last-minute costs, ensures safety, and provides peace of mind; certificates issued now are valid until 2032.

  • Yes, a compliance certificate valid for five years is required when selling or leasing a property with a pool.
