Which Standard Applies to You?

• Pre-8 April 1991 — AS1926.1-1986 applies

• 8 April 1991 – 30 April 2010 — AS1926.1-1993 applies

• From 1 May 2010 onward — AS1926.1-2012 applies

These standards define barrier height, gaps, gate mechanisms, and more.

Compliance Considerations

• Barrier must be continuous and ≥1.2m in height

• No vertical gaps >100mm; no climbable objects within 900mm radius

• Gate must open away from the pool, self-close and self-latch from any open position

• Latch must be ≥1500mm above ground or shielded from child reach

• Spas must be enclosed with a compliant safety barrier OR fitted with a lockable, child-resistant cover (VBA Spa Guide)

What Happens If You Fail?

You'll receive a notice of non-compliance. You must fix all issues within 30–60 days. A reinspection will be required before a Form 23 compliance certificate can be issued.

Fines may apply if you don’t take action. Delays can prevent home sale or council registration.
